STATUS : concept design
PROGRAM : mixed-use, high density development
NOTE : designed to optimize health outcomes

The Cypress Hills Healthy Urbanism initative was a collaboration between a visionary client (Cypress Hills CDC), a health scientist (HealthxDesign) and ISA to investigate the potential for health outcomes to influence large-scale neighborhood design. The client provided the consulting team a sandbox to invent an approach and “system of thinking”. A series of sites were identified ranging in size from half an acre to six acres. A general bucket of mixed-use programs including food-oriented uses, recreation, art spaces, and affordable housing became ingredients for dynamic additions to the urban fabric, as well as components to encourage healthy lifestyles.

The consulting team developed a conceptual tool in order to bring spatial design and health outcomes into communication with one another. “The Matrix” is a key proposal of the work which creates a bridge between health-related research and literature, factors, health impacts, program, and design parameters. Unlike the often linear check-list approaches typical of green building scoring systems, the tool was intentionally flexible, but rigorous, so the science of health could help energize design creativity rather than limit it.

STATUS : completed - pending publication
PROGRAM : PennDesign Symposium
NOTE :

Making Space was co-conceived by Brian Phillips, Chris Marcinkoski, and Abigail Smith. The premise was to curate a conversation through a series of diverse points of view that promote a broader definition of design thinking and impact. Across panels themed around Advocacy, New Work, Expertise, Provoke, Engage, and the Unknown participants explored new territories and vocabularies through which the role of design can be expanded and amplified. We expect the Making Space initiative to take new forms to be announced sometime in 2013..

LOCATION : Boston, MA
STATUS : built (on-going)
PROGRAM : 4 houses
NOTE : Net Zero Energy

In collaboration with a local developer (Urbanica), ISA was one of 3 winning competition teams to partner with the Boston Redevelopment Authority and pilot net zero energy housing prototypes. The E+ initiative was developed by the Boston Mayor's Office. Our design features 1500 SF 3-bedroom attached houses with generous rear yards, third level terraces, and extensive green building tactics including a significant photovoltaic solar array that pushes each buildings HERS rating below 0 (net zero energy). The homes will be completed in early 2013.

The scheme proposes to re-inhabit the wilderness that, since the 1974 demolition, has gradually re-populated the abandoned Pruitt Igoe site with native flora and fauna not typically found in the center of a large city. By treating the site lightly, with a series of small-scale, low-impact interventions we aim to catalyze community development around the site. As the site becomes an attractor, the possibilities for infill on vacant land in neighboring urban fabric would grow. We propose anchoring this new urban fabric with a major iconic civic building – a new St. Louis Arch for the 21st Century – and finally increasing density with a series of buildings ringing the site and enlivening the street edge. We are positioning the role of powerful architecture as a future payoff for growing a new healthy urban fabric incrementally, rather than architecture as a catalyst in itself.

Urban Terraform is an experiment in deeply sustainable, urban architecture. We define sustainability broadly as a multi-layered composite of urban, architectural, environmental and economic considerations. The project uses everyday program typologies as a point of departure for new hybrid conditions, and looks to wire them into the existing energy of the city as a method for creating a busy, twenty-four hour precinct for both locals and visitors. We look to invite the vibrant red umbrella markets adjacent to our site as a new connective tissue to enliven surrounding urban streets. Our overall goal is to create a new hybrid urban building that is equally attractive to both locals, business people, students, and tourists without the stigma of projects customized to any one group. By bringing this diverse set of actors into close, comfortable proximity – economic, social and cultural advantages are achieved.

In collaboration with developer Postgreen Homes, ISA has designed a production housing line that focuses on the modest, green, urban infill market. The homes range in size from 1000-1400 SF and rely on both standard features and user customization. Eight houses have been built from the initial prototype and we expect dozens to be constructed in Philadelphia over the next 18 months with models being developed for other cities. It has won several awards including a 2011 AIA National Housing Award and has been featured in numerous publications including DWELL

ISA developed a design for 12 new houses in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia. The units are arranged in a courtyard configuration that accommodates off-street parking and allows the inside units to have direct views to the street. The dynamic facade looks to exploit the non-bearing characteristics of the exterior walls of the townhouse typology.

The iconic buildings pick up on cues in the existing playful, eclectic urban fabric, celebrating the unique character of the place while providing a new "layer" of architecture that can begin to galvanize a new image. The houses will be the first urban neighborhood development in the US to be WaterSense certified.

The competition entry addressed the demographic shifts that characterize Long Island communities along the commuter railroad.
